“When the world overwhelms, I find the best thing to do is to start by accomplishing… just one little thing.”
-Ducky, aka Dr. Mallard
Season 12, Episode 7, “The Searchers”
Sometimes, in trying to do “everything,” we find ourselves accomplishing very little, and certainly far less than we want to. Life pours pressure down on us, and the great and very important task we’re trying to do just seems impossible. In such times, there is benefit in stopping, breathing, and letting go of the end goal, or rather the multitude of obstacles surrounding that goal, for a moment. We don’t have to finish the journey immediately, and when we try, we often misstep and go tumbling on hard, unforgiving ground. Instead, just do one thing, small and simple. Just take one step. As long as you’re moving forward, that’s what counts.
You don’t need to do the all the big things, all at once, to have worth. Just do the little things, one after another, and remember that each tiny accomplishment is a victory. With that in mind, you can restore your own flagging strength even while moving forward, one small step at a time.
And if you can just keep taking those small steps in the right direction, well, before you know it, you’ll have arrived at your destination.
