Zelda Challenge Day 13: Scariest Thing in Zelda

Now this would have been an ideal post for Halloween.

Let’s be honest, there are a lot of creepy, crawly, scary monsters on Zedla. Which is part of why we love it, right? We get to be the hero taking these monster down! πŸ™‚ Moblins, gohma, dodongos, wolfos, armos, etc., nothing can stop us!

…but there are a few monsters that are a cut above the rest, ya know? At least, in terms of scariness, and they tend to be the ones that reminds us of death.

Stalfos, for instance. A walking skeleton can be infinitely more terrifying than a fully-armored knight, and even more so when it has a sword, a shield, and crazy jumping skills. Still, some proper swordplay and you’re golden.

Skulltulas come in a variety of sizes, and the bigger, the worse. Lurking around any corner, clutching the wall, dropping down from above. I took great delight in killing skulltulas before they could do that, once I got a bow and arrow.

Deadhands are creepy, pale arms of the dead, far longer than they should be, reaching up to grab you and pin you in one place, helpless, and draining your life force. Creepy, but avoidable.

Wallmasters take things up another notch. I mean, their just animated hands, but very large ones, walking around until they find you. Or when you enter a room, that shadow that appears over yours, growing as it descends with a whistle of air, and the only thing you can do is run. And if you manage to avoid it, you then have to kill it before it can jump right back up into the darkness above and repeat the whole process, always coming straight for you. You have to be quick and constant to beat them.

All of these are scary. The scariest things in the franchise, barring certain bosses.

redeadBut the scariest, to me, has to be the redead. If that unnerving moan wasn’t enough, if how many strikes it takes to kill them wasn’t enough, if that slow shuffle and sudden death grip as they drain your life force wasn’t enough… that paralyzing scream pushes it all over the edge! I don’t care who you are, that scream is a terrifying sound!

There are only two ways to avoid it.

Either you sneak, slowly and quietly and carefully, creeping up behind the redead in question, and unleash a flurry of blows to kill it while it tries to turn around and kill you….

…or you use a magic song to temporarily paralyze them, and then either kill as many as you can or just plain run for it! I can assure you, I did plenty of both of those! πŸ™‚

My answer is the moon from Majora’s Mask. That thing is very creepy and I can’t imagine it being up in the sky, looking down on us, every night.
